Local Neighbourhoods

Our community shared how important places are across our City.

Local neighbourhoods are valuable to our everyday lives. They provide opportunities for connection where small businesses and corner stores offer people a chance to access their daily needs and meet with family and friends for a coffee and chat. Our local parks and green spaces provide areas to exercise, play, enjoy the environment, relax and gather for a local event.

Our community value the ability to walk and ride to local services and facilities, and therefore value well maintained footpaths, bike paths and walking trails that are easy and enjoyable to access and use.

Our neighbourhoods support wellbeing as we connect with our neighbours, support each other and build community. Small events are important in building a sense of place and local pride. From joining a local greening group, to holding a street party, these everyday connections instil local pride and build connection.

Every neighbourhood is different in its own unique way, and we cherish and support the individual nature of these areas in a way that is equitable and reflects the unique nature of the area.

Local Neighbourhoods Kate Newman

"The Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club has been incredible in the way they’ve supported inclusion. Thank you to the Council for their involvement. I harassed them for about two years before we got our accessible beach ramp, so thank you for putting up with me! If you’re at Point Malcolm Reserve I’d love you to come down and see the wonderful job they’ve done with the ramp. If you can, you should - That’s my message around inclusion."

Local Neighbourhoods Connie

"A good neighbour is a true treasure. It’s been absolutely wonderful to have everybody come together, young and old and from different cultures which is just lovely. Everybody brought out a plate to share and we had some pizza. Street Meets have definitely helped all of us come together closer. "

Local Neighbourhoods Laurie

"Our centre here at Cheltenham is a very special place. It’s a place that I happily come to work and I never know what to expect. Similarly in the library service, you don’t know who’s going to walk through your door. You can plan so much, but then the random thing happens and I think that’s the great beauty of what we do."

Laurie - Resident and Retired City of Charles Sturt Employee

Local Neighbourhoods Sabir

“What I love about the Brocas is having this opportunity to connect with youth in our communities, have fun and create memories that are lifelong. This community centre is a safe spot for community and youth to connect with one another and it gives a sense of belonging. In high school this centre was always a safe space where I felt like I was welcomed. I’m now completing my final social work placement which I luckily got allocated here.”

Sabir Muridi – Social Work Student on Placement at the Brocas Youth Space.
